The proof Tesla never sent
In 1896 a monk went to dinner in New York and came away expecting mathematics. What is actually on file is a letter, a promise, and some Sanskrit in a newspaper thirty four years later.

On the fifth of February 1896, at a dinner in New York, a Hindu monk in his thirties met the most famous electrical engineer in America. The same day the monk wrote to a friend in England about it. Tesla, he said, was charmed to hear about the Vedantic prana and akasha and the kalpas, and thought he could demonstrate mathematically that force and matter are reducible to potential energy. The monk was going back the following week to see the demonstration.
The monk was Vivekananda, three years after the speech in Chicago that made him famous. You can feel the excitement in the letter. If matter and energy are the same thing wearing different clothes, then the old cosmology holds up in a laboratory: one field, one force acting on it, worlds appearing and dissolving in cycles. A monk who had spent nearly three years telling American audiences that the many are one was about to get it in equations, from a man with patents.
Tesla never produced it. There was some correspondence, and then nothing, and the demonstration does not exist. The relation between mass and energy arrived nine years later, from a clerk in a Swiss patent office who had never heard of either of them, and it says nothing whatsoever about kalpas.
The story does not end there, which is why it keeps circulating. In 1907 Tesla wrote an essay that no one published until a newspaper ran it in 1930, and in it he says that all perceptible matter comes from a primary substance filling all space, the akasha or luminiferous ether, acted on by the life-giving prana. Those are Sanskrit words in an American newspaper, under the byline of the man who electrified half the country, eleven years after that dinner. Something stuck.
And then the internet gets hold of it. You will find pages telling you that Tesla studied Vedanta, that he proved the ancient cosmology, that modern physics has confirmed akasha, usually next to a photograph of him with a book he is not reading. So it is worth being precise about what is actually documented, because I find the real version more interesting than the inflated one.
Documented: a dinner, a letter written the same day, a claim Tesla made about what he could do, a planned visit, a promise not kept, and Sanskrit vocabulary in an essay he wrote a decade later. That is the whole file. Not a study, not a proof, not a conversion.
And the part almost nobody mentions. Tesla's primary substance was the luminiferous ether, which was not mysticism in 1907, it was the mainstream physics of his youth, the medium light was supposed to wave in. The field abandoned it. Tesla did not, and went on defending it long after the argument had moved, along with his rejection of relativity, which he called a beautiful thing dressed in mathematics that people mistake for reality. So the sentence people love to quote is not a bulletin from the frontier. It is a great engineer holding a losing position, and reaching for the most elegant vocabulary he had ever heard for it, which he had picked up from a monk at dinner.
None of which is a reason to sneer at the monk either. He wanted the mathematics, and I understand why. Half the sting of these claims is the suspicion that they are only poetry, and a proof would end the suspicion. But look at what he was asking for. He wanted a physicist to certify a claim about the one thing physics has no instrument for, which is the fact that any of this is being experienced at all. Physics can tell you what the wave is made of. It has nothing to say about the fact that the wave shows up for you, and it has never claimed to.
That is the category slip I keep watching people make, in both directions. Materialists announce that consciousness is explained because the correlates are being mapped, and mystics announce that quantum mechanics proves oneness, and both are trying to settle a first person question with third person data. Vedanta does not need a Nobel to hold up. It also does not get a free pass because Tesla once used the word akasha in a newspaper.
What I take from the whole episode is smaller and a bit sad. Two brilliant men, at the top of their fields, both convinced the other's discipline held the missing piece. The monk wanted equations and the engineer wanted a picture, and they went home with each other's vocabulary and no demonstration between them. The thing they were circling was in the room the entire evening, being the room, doing the wanting on both sides of the table. Neither of them could hand it to the other, and that is not a failure of the meeting. It is the one part of the story that fits what they were talking about.
